The Nuanced and Diverse History of Pakistan’s National Dress

Pakistan is a country doused with diversity in every aspect of their culture — the history of their national dress is no different.

As a Canadian with Pakistani roots, I wore the shalwar kameez less often than my go-to t-shirt and sweats. Yet, that never lessened the cultural significance of the outfit. For years, I’ve worn the shalwar kameez without recognizing its diverse history. And maybe you have, too.

Today, that changes.

I: THE HISTORY & ORIGINS

The origins of the shalwar kameez are not clear, with several stories running around. The most common, perhaps, is that the dress originates from the Mughal era. The shalwar kameez as we have it today is an adaptation of a combination of loose pants and a tunic that existed during the time of the Mughals. The Mughals were recognized for their rich embroidery, and many in the royal family wore the Anarkali dress.

The shalwar kameez, although said to have been adapted from the Mughal era, is also thoroughly influenced by Greek and Persian cultures.

Over the years, the shalwar kameez has been adapted to different tastes, styles and cultures. The shalwar kameez does not just originate from a single country, but from several different countries, cultures and adaptations. It’s almost as if every bead and design is a little bit of diversity sewn right on.

II: THE DESIGN

The shalwar kameez in many ways is similar to its original form, however, there have been many adaptations and changes throughout the decades. The shalwar kameez consists of two main articles of clothing: the shalwar — a loose trouser-like pajama — and the kameez — a knee-length top with different sleeve-lengths. Both are designed to be extremely comfortable and come in a variety of different fabrics. When worn by women, the kameez is often paired with a dupatta, a matching sheer fabric scarf that goes around the neck or side for extra modesty.

The designs are versatile, from fitted tops for homewear to heavily beaded designs for more dressy events. Though the salwar kameez has been around for many years, the outfit remains in-trend with the current fashion without losing its comfort and relevance.

The shalwar kameez is chosen for its sheer comfort and beautiful varieties. Topped with hundreds of styles, both Pakistani women and men have tons of options to choose from.

III: WHY WE LOVE THE SHALWAR KAMEEZ

Due to its history, origins, and designs, the shalwar kameez remains a favourite for Pakistani citizens. I love the salwar kameez because of its adaptability. The same clothing can be worn around the house, but also to a formal wedding, providing comfort and elegance. In Pakistan, the shalwar kameez is sold for cheaper prices than your average western clothing.

The shalwar kameez will always hold a special place in the heart of all shalwar kameez wearers, even those outside of Pakistan. Though the embroidery sometimes itches my skin and the fabric cinches under my arms, I always take pleasure wearing the shalwar kameez. There is diversity, culture, hardwork and love sewn into every strand of silk, and for that the shalwar kameez will always hold a place in my closet — and my heart.
